The Internal Medicine Division

The Internal Medicine Division at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) comprises seven internal medicine departments. While they operate as separate units, they maintain continuous communication and professional collaboration, admitting patients according to an ongoing rotation system. The division houses numerous leading institutes and services and maintains an ongoing relationship with the surrounding community. The division’s top physicians and nursing staff are committed to excellence and continuous effort to uphold professional quality and provide personalized, human care to hospitalized and community patients.

"Our work is intensive, covering many fields and extending far beyond routine patient care, whether in ambulatory settings or hospitalization. Our connection with the community and the population in our area is deep and extensive. Our strong community involvement and professional reputation in the medical community attract top-tier students and residents," explains Professor Micha Rapoport, Head of the Internal Medicine Division.

Each department comprises 38 beds but can accommodate up to 45 patients when necessary. The average hospitalization duration in the internal medicine departments is short, lasting only 3-4 days. The division consists of multiple leading institutes and services, including cardiology, nephrology, pulmonology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, oncology, diabetes, neurology, rheumatology, intensive care, and more. Some departments specialize in these fields due to the unique expertise of their physicians. Additionally, the Anesthesia and Operating Rooms Department operates under the Internal Medicine Division and includes 21 operating rooms, five of which are designated for ambulatory surgery.

The Internal Medicine Division closely collaborates with the geriatric hospital "Shmuel Harofeh," from which a dedicated physician is stationed in the emergency department at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) for patient care. Geriatric patients receive treatment in both hospitals as needed, enabling an integrated and effective approach to their care.

The Team

Despite the similarities in patient demographics and cases across the departments, some departments specialize in specific fields. Thanks to the expertise of their physicians, the departments consult each other based on their specialties. The division’s professional staff is highly active in academic teaching and holds senior positions in medical education. Professor Rapoport, the division head, serves as the head of the six-year medical program at Tel Aviv University and oversees the clinical curriculum across all medical tracks at the university. This commitment to excellence has resulted in the division attracting some of the most skilled and academically accomplished medical residents.
