Significantly increase in the chances of curing cancer

A new study at Shamir Medical Center: Reducing Stress levels ahead of tumor removal surgery lowers chances of future metastases.

Prof. Oded Zmora

In encouraging news for candidates for surgery, a team of researchers from Shamir Medical Center and Tel Aviv University succeeded to significantly reduce the risk of cancer metastases after tumor resection in colon cancer patients. By administering a short-term drug treatment before the operation, the researchers – Prof. Oded Zmora, Chair of Shamir Medical Center’s Department of Surgery, and Prof. Shamgar Ben Eliyahu, who heads a neuro-immunology lab at Tel-Aviv University’s Sagol School of Neuroscience and School of Psychological Sciences – were able to lower patients’ physiological stress response and inflammation during the critical pre-operative period, thus preventing the development of cancerous metastases in postoperative years.

“The aim of the research, which is currently expanding, is to provide a simple and readily available intervention to significantly increase the chances of curing thousands of cancer patients in Israel, and later millions worldwide,” said Prof. Ben-Eliyahu. And Prof. Zmora adds, “The study’s success will turn the treatment into a routine part of the medical guidelines published by medical associations in Israel and around the world for a large number of cancer patients.”
